The best way to distinguish a pure vegetation-fire plume from an industrial contribution would be actual monitoring data for benzene, acrolein, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, chlorine compounds, dioxins and trace metals, together with satellite plume trajectories. A general AQI warning usually measures particles and ozone, but does not prove that unusual industrial toxins are absent.
For protection, an N95 helps substantially with PM2.5 but does not filter ozone or most gases. Staying inside with recirculated air and a properly sized HEPA purifier is more protective; activated carbon can provide some additional gas and odor reduction.
